After Jones’s next game, Blood Money, critics called him “brilliant” and joked that his pyrotechnic games suggested there was a menacing mind behind the scenes. With money from Menace, he bought a 16-valve Vauxhall Astra. Released in 1988, Menace sold 15,000 copies, an impressive amount for an indie game, earned critical acclaim and enough cash – around £20,000 – for Jones to indulge his other passion: cars. The result was Menace – an inside joke for Dundonians as Dennis the Menace was invented by a cartoonist in the city.

The story began in Dundee where an aspiring young game developer, Dave Jones, dreamed of making an arcade-style game for computers.

But while GTA has become the most ambitiously American game ever created, its roots are in Scotland.
